Heritage Club Games THANK YOU!

Saturday, August 17, 2019

On Saturday, August 17th the West Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club, Hollyburn Sailing Club and our West Vancouver Tennis Club hosted 22 teams in the inaugural Heritage Club Games and the feedback has been fantastic!  The day began with a lawn bowling tournament followed by a parade of participants behind a bag piper to the tennis club where teams dispersed between tennis skills and drills, sailing related competitive fun (can you say wet!?) and a tasty chicken BBQ. Points were tallied while people relaxed with a beverage and watched an exhibition match, after which awards were presented by Mayor Mary-Ann Booth. Even the weather cooperated!

A special and huge thanks to Leslie Sielski who presented the idea for this event many months ago and who has “lived it” from start to finish. The goal was to reach out to the community to showcase the history and heritage of our club as a true and accessible community asset.  We want recognition as a club that warrants ongoing support by the community and the District of West Vancouver.

Thank you to those who helped make this event happen. It takes a team effort by organizers, volunteers and participants to bring a day like this together and that’s exactly what happened. The organizations involved were the three heritage clubs as well as The West Vancouver Foundation and A4K (Athletics for Kids). On top of that there were countless donors and five sponsors:  North Shore News, Vancity, Stong’s Market, Coast Capital Savings and Swiss Sports Haus.

Thank yous and shout outs at our club go to Donna Allaby and her team (Leslie O’Connell, Robert Pearson, Jessie Alexander, Caroline Sickavish) who took charge of the BBQ, Paul Tornquist and his coaches who ran the tennis drills, Bonnie Collins and her recruits (Bob Hafizi, Lynne Hughes, Joanna Ashworth, Liz Gandhi, Kim Adamson, Marguerite Bachmann) who ran the bar and lent a hand in the kitchen, Leah Currie for her tasteful and beautiful décor, Janis McCaffrey for her help with donations, Marina Alexander as Master Scorekeeper, and the many volunteers who did on court scorekeeping, took photos, cleaned up and offered a hand wherever needed (Sandy Sutton, Sabine Ritson, Martha McKenzie, Cassandra Harrison).
